As you drive to Kinlochleven from Glencoe on the High Road you may see a lorry park near the campsite of Caolasnacon. The driver once wrote the name of a woman on the cab so she knew he loved her. Since then the name has remained and the truck and is now known as Gayle of the Glen.
GAYLE OF THE GLEN
Once upon a time when a winter came
In a Highland glen where Garbhein sets the scene
A man painted words with a woman’s name
A secret to be seen on the cab of a truck.
It was time to drive it was time to write
Stories for the road and set aheart alight,
When the darkness fell from behind a brae
There was wind and snow, and feelings gone astray.
Let us fall in love off the back of the truck
Now the season’s struck and will bring us luck.
The snow has come and I can’t see the Ben
But I am driving home with Gayle of the Glen.
People make the stories, stories make the glen.
But we live and die and leave them all unseen.
As the truck is driven and pain forgiven.
let the words be written and spoken by the scene.
Let us fall in love off the back of the truck
Now the season’s struck and will bring us luck.
The snow has come and I can’t see the Ben
But I am driving home with Gayle of the Glen.
When the salmon‘s back he will come again
Driving through the glen to lift the shades of pain
Ships will bring more tales, no bridge is too low.
Narrows will widen for new joys here to grow
See the eagle high circling in the sky,
Hear the robin chirp tunes on the washing line.
Spiders’ web now glistens over heavy dew
As the rainbow shrouds a new burn with a hue
Time to fall in love off the back of a truck
Now the summer’s struck and will bring us luck.
I can hear the engine roar into the glen
Someone ‘s driving home with Gayle of the Glen.
